February- 3 day Masterclass with Lea Durie at S.Mountain Ceramics Studio

Take your ceramics into the untamed wild! 

Join Lea Durie for an immersive journey into the world of locally dug wild clays. This hand-on workshop is for curious makers wanting to connect their craft with the environment and sustainable practices. Over three days you will gain an appreciation of the unique opportunities and challenges presented by finding and working with wild clay, expanding your creative practice into exciting new areas. 

Over three days you will:

• Learn to ethically find and harvest wild clay 

• Apply methods to process and test your clay, exploring the different outcomes from a range of clays

• Blend wild clay with commercial clays to create unique clay bodies

• Create test pieces and small creative pieces with the clays we prepare.

• Equip yourself with the knowledge to continue your wild clay journey independently.

This is a course for beginners and seasoned potters wanting to unlock new possibilities in their clay journey. We will be all about experimentation and play with this exciting ancient material leaving you with the skills to keep your wild clay adventure going.

Participants are encouraged to bring along some of their own clay to test.

What to expect?

Day One:

• Dive into the world of wild clay starting with learning how to find your clay 

• Test a variety of clays, understanding their unique properties

Day Two: 

• Explore ways to process different clays, ready for making

• Experiment with blending wild and commercial clays to create exciting clay bodies for any project

Day Three:

• Create beautiful surfaces on your pieces using wild clay and rock pigments

With lots of time for hands-on making time over the three days to get creative with the material. Pieces can be taken home or left for firing later.
